Best Time to Lay Sod in Calgary — And How to Prep Your Yard

Timing your sod install right is one of the most important factors in whether your new lawn takes root and thrives — or struggles through its first season. Calgary's climate has a narrower window than most Canadian cities think, and getting it wrong by even a few weeks can mean the difference between a lawn that establishes quickly and one that browns out before it ever gets going.

Here's exactly when to lay sod in Calgary and how to prepare your yard so it roots fast and stays healthy.

The Best Time to Lay Sod in Calgary

The ideal window for laying sod in Calgary is mid-May through mid-September. Within that window, the two best periods are:

Late spring (mid-May to mid-June) — This is the sweet spot. The ground is warming up, temperatures are moderate, and there's typically enough natural moisture in the ground from spring melt to help new sod establish without constant watering. Sod laid in late May has the entire growing season ahead of it to root deeply before winter.

Early fall (mid-August to mid-September) — The second best window. Temperatures are cooler which reduces stress on new sod, there's usually more rain, and the ground is still warm enough to encourage root growth before freeze-up. Fall installs often root faster than summer installs for this reason.

How to Prep Your Yard Before Laying Sod

Preparation is everything. The most common reason new sod fails in Calgary isn't the sod — it's the ground it was laid on. Here's how to do it right.

Step 1 — Remove existing vegetation

Kill and remove any existing grass, weeds, or plants from the area. You can use a sod cutter to strip existing lawn, or kill it off with a non-residual herbicide and rake it clear. Don't lay new sod over old grass — the decomposing layer underneath will create an uneven surface and prevent roots from reaching the soil.

Step 2 — Grade and level the area

Rake the area to remove rocks, debris, and large clumps. Grade the surface so it slopes gently away from your home — typically about 1 inch of drop per 10 feet. This prevents water from pooling against your foundation. Low spots will show up as depressions in your finished lawn and collect water, so take the time to fill and level them now.

Step 3 — Add screened topsoil

This is the step most Calgary homeowners skip — and regret. Calgary's native soil is heavy clay that drains poorly and doesn't give roots much to work with. Spread 3 to 4 inches of screened topsoil over the area before laying sod. The topsoil gives roots a welcoming layer of loose, fertile soil to establish in quickly. Step 4 — Lightly compact and rake smooth

After spreading topsoil, lightly compact it with a lawn roller and rake the surface smooth. You want a firm but not hard surface — loose enough for roots to penetrate but compacted enough that the sod doesn't sink unevenly when walked on.

Step 5 — Lay sod immediately after delivery

Start along a straight edge (driveway, fence, or bed edge), stagger the joints like brickwork, and press each roll firmly against the next with no gaps. Use a sharp knife to cut around curves and edges.

Step 6 — Water immediately and consistently

Water your new sod within 30 minutes of laying it. For the first two weeks, keep the sod and the top inch of soil consistently moist — typically once or twice daily depending on temperature and wind. After two weeks, water deeply but less frequently to encourage roots to grow downward. You'll know the sod has rooted when you can't easily lift a corner without resistance.
