Where Calgary’s Limestone Actually Comes From
The limestone sold in Calgary for landscaping isn’t imported from overseas. It’s quarried right here in Alberta — sourced from the Canadian Rockies, out of the Bow Valley near Canmore and the Crowsnest Pass.
When you buy limestone in Calgary, there’s a solid chance it came from this region — quarried from the same Palliser formation limestone that makes up the foothills and mountain front you can see from the city on a clear day.

What Calgary Limestone Actually Looks Like
This is where a lot of descriptions get it wrong by describing the wrong product entirely.
Alberta landscape limestone is a fractured, angular aggregate — it’s crushed and screened to a consistent size, but it has jagged, irregular edges rather than the smooth rounded shape of wash rock or round rock. The natural break lines give it texture and make it lock together well on slopes and in beds.
Colour: Calgary limestone ranges from medium to dark grey, often with warm undertones. It’s not the creamy beige limestone you might see in European tile catalogues — that’s a completely different product from Germany. Alberta limestone has a distinctly cooler, rockier palette that suits the landscape it came from.
Texture: Dense and rough to the touch. The fractured faces catch light differently throughout the day, giving a natural, varied look rather than the flat uniform appearance of rounded stone.
Weight: Limestone is heavy — denser than materials like Rundle Rock or wash rock of the same size. Factor this in for delivery and spreading.
The Three Sizes and What They’re Best For

The finest of the three. Dense coverage, tight pack, and a more uniform surface finish. Works well in areas where you want a clean, almost gravel-like look — narrow side yards, tight garden beds, or as a base layer under larger rock.
20mm Limestone
The most versatile size and our top seller. Big enough to read as decorative rock, small enough to work in most residential applications. This is the go-to for front yard beds, around trees and shrubs, along fences, and pathway borders.
40mm Limestone
The boldest of the three. Larger angular pieces that make a statement, handle better on slopes, and work well for drainage swales and drainage beds where you need water to move through freely. Also popular for commercial and acreage applications where a chunkier look fits the scale.

A single cubic yard of 20mm limestone covers approximately 95 square feet at a 3-inch depth — which is the recommended installation depth for decorative rock to suppress weeds effectively.
For a quick estimate: Length (ft) × Width (ft) × 3 ÷ 324 = Yards Needed
Round up to the nearest half yard so you’re not coming up short on a delivery that already costs what it costs.
Installation Tips
Landscape fabric first. Always. It’s the difference between a clean rock bed and a weedy mess two seasons later.
Edge it properly. Steel or aluminum landscape edging holds limestone in place and keeps it from migrating onto the lawn or sidewalk.
3 inches minimum. Less than that and weeds will push through and the rock will look thin and patchy.
Don’t mix sizes. Layering 10mm and 20mm limestone in the same bed creates an uneven, unsettled look. Pick a size and commit.
