What "screened" means
Screened topsoil has been passed through a ¾ inch screen to remove large rocks, clumps, and debris. What you're left with is a clean, workable soil that's easy to spread and grade. Occasionally very small rocks come through the screen — this is normal and doesn't affect the quality or performance of the soil.
What it's used for
- Sod preparation — the most common use in Calgary. Spread 3–4 inches before laying Kentucky bluegrass sod for fast establishment and strong roots
- New lawn installs — creates a clean, level base for seeding or sodding
- Topping up low spots — fill in uneven areas, depressions, and settled ground
- Garden bed building — add depth and organic matter to shallow or clay-heavy soil
- Grading and levelling — brings yards to grade before landscaping or hardscaping
- Tree and shrub planting — backfill around new plantings to give roots the best start
Why local matters
Our topsoil is sourced from farms and suppliers just outside Calgary. Local soil is conditioned to Alberta's climate — it behaves predictably through freeze-thaw cycles and establishes well in our growing season. It's not shipped in from out of province and sitting in a warehouse.
