The standard formula is: Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 324 = cubic yards needed. For most garden beds and pathways, 3 inches deep is recommended — 1 cubic yard covers approximately 100 square feet at that depth. For a standard double driveway, you'll typically need 8–10 yards of road crush. Use our free Material Calculator to get the exact quantity for your project, or call us at 403-510-9011 and we'll help you figure it out.
The most popular choices for Calgary yards are Rundle Rock and Wash Rock. Rundle Rock is a natural Alberta stone with a warm grey-brown colour — it works beautifully in both modern and traditional yard designs and is our top seller. Wash Rock is a smooth, rounded gravel that's great for pathways and drainage. Limestone is ideal for driveways and areas that need a compactable surface. For a modern, high-contrast look, Crystal White Rock stands out against dark soil and green plants. Not sure which is right for your project? Call us and we'll help you choose.
Road crush (also called road base or crushed aggregate) is a blend of crushed rock and stone dust that compacts tightly when packed. Unlike decorative rock, it locks together under pressure — making it ideal as a base material for driveways, under patio stones and pavers, pathways, and drainage projects. It handles Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles extremely well and prevents shifting and sinking over our cold winters. For driveways, we recommend a minimum 4-inch compacted layer, which requires approximately 1.3 yards per 100 square feet.
The best time to lay sod in Calgary is mid-May through mid-September, when soil temperatures are consistently above 10°C. Late May through June is the sweet spot — the ground is warming, there's usually enough moisture from spring melt, and your new lawn has the entire growing season ahead to establish deeply before freeze-up. Avoid laying sod in peak summer heat (mid-July to mid-August) if possible, as it requires constant watering to prevent stress. Our Kentucky Bluegrass sod is harvested fresh the same day it's delivered for fastest establishment.
No — you don't need to be home. When you order, just leave delivery instructions telling us where on your property to place the materials (driveway, backyard, beside the garage, etc.). We'll deliver and place it exactly where you need it. If you have any special access requirements or gates, just add a note at checkout or call us at 403-510-9011 before your delivery.
For topdressing an existing lawn, apply screened loam at ½ to 1 inch depth — 1 cubic yard covers approximately 300 square feet at 1 inch deep. For a full new lawn installation, apply 3–4 inches of topsoil before seeding or sodding — 1 yard covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches. Calgary's native clay soil benefits greatly from added loam and garden mix to improve drainage and root development. Order early in spring — screened loam and topsoil sell out fast once the ground thaws in April.
Screened topsoil (loam) is native soil that has been passed through a screen to remove rocks and debris. It's ideal for lawn leveling, new lawn installation, and filling low spots. Garden mix is a blend of approximately 70% screened topsoil and 30% compost — it's richer in nutrients and better for vegetable gardens, flower beds, and raised planters where you want maximum plant growth. For a new lawn, screened topsoil is the right choice. For garden beds and planters, garden mix is worth the extra investment.
