Recycled asphalt is one of the smartest choices you can make for a Calgary driveway or pathway. It's tough, cost-effective, and one of the few materials that actually gets stronger over time — the residual bitumen in the asphalt reactivates with heat and traffic, binding the surface together into a firm, dust-free finish that holds up through Alberta's freeze-thaw cycles better than most alternatives. If you want a durable driveway surface without the cost of new asphalt or concrete, recycled asphalt is the answer.

What it is

Recycled asphalt is old asphalt pavement that has been ground up, screened, and processed for reuse. The grinding process breaks it into a workable aggregate that still contains residual bitumen — the binding agent that made the original pavement solid. When compacted and exposed to heat from the sun and traffic, that bitumen reactivates and binds the surface back together, creating a firm, semi-solid surface that resists shifting, rutting, and dust.

What it's used for

  • Driveways and parking pads — the most popular application in Calgary. Compacts into a firm, dust-free surface that handles vehicle traffic well and holds up through freeze-thaw cycles
  • Rural roads and acreage laneways — a go-to surface material for farm lanes and acreage driveways where a permanent paved surface isn't practical
  • Pathways and walkways — creates a solid, level walking surface that stays firm and doesn't shift underfoot
  • Road base and sub-base — used as a stable base layer under new paving, gravel surfaces, and heavy-use areas
  • Temporary construction access roads — fast to install, handles equipment traffic, and can be reclaimed and reused again when the project is done
  • Parking lots and commercial yards — cost-effective alternative to new asphalt for large surface areas

Why it performs well in Calgary

Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles are hard on driveways. Loose gravel shifts and ruts. Concrete cracks. New asphalt is expensive. Recycled asphalt hits the middle ground — it compacts firmly, flexes slightly through freeze-thaw without cracking, and the surface hardens progressively with heat and use. By mid-summer after installation, a properly compacted recycled asphalt driveway feels almost as solid as new pavement — at a fraction of the cost.

Installation tip

For best results, install recycled asphalt in layers of 3–4 inches and compact each layer before adding the next. Water lightly during compaction to help the material bind. The surface will continue to harden over the first full season as heat and traffic work the bitumen.

How much do you need?

For a 4-inch driveway layer, budget roughly 1.3 cubic yards per 100 square feet. Use our free calculator for an exact number.
