Bedding sand is the layer that makes or breaks a paving stone installation. Get it right and your patio, walkway, or driveway stays level and solid for years. Skip it or use the wrong material and you'll be resetting pavers every spring after Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles do their damage. Our 5mm bedding sand is screened to a consistent fine grain, compacts firmly, and is the standard base material used by Calgary landscapers and contractors for paving stone installs.
What it's used for
- Paving stone and interlock base — the primary use. Spread 1 inch of bedding sand over your compacted gravel base before setting pavers for a level, stable surface
- Flagstone installation — fills and levels beneath irregular flagstone to create an even surface that doesn't rock or tip
- Brick and natural stone patios — standard base layer for any mortarless patio or outdoor flooring install
- Paver joint filling — swept into the gaps between pavers after installation to lock them together and prevent shifting
- Playground and sandbox fill — clean, fine-grained and safe for play areas
- Levelling and grading — used to fine-tune grades and levels on small areas before surface installation
- Pipe bedding — protects drainage and utility pipe from sharp edges and uneven ground
Why the base layer matters in Calgary
Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles are brutal on paving stone installations. Ground that isn't properly prepared heaves in spring and settles unevenly in summer. A properly compacted gravel base topped with 1 inch of bedding sand absorbs movement and keeps your surface level season after season. It's not the glamorous part of the job — but it's the part that determines whether your patio looks great in year five or needs to be reset every spring.
Installation tip
The correct bedding sand layer is 1 inch — not more. Too thick and it becomes unstable under load. Spread it over your compacted road crush base, screed it level, and set your pavers directly on top. Do not compact the sand before setting pavers — compact after.
How much do you need?
