Washed sand is one of those materials that does a lot of jobs quietly and well. The 3mm particle size and washing process removes dust, clay, and fine debris — leaving a clean, consistent sand that performs reliably whether you're building a patio, filling a sandbox, or topdressing a lawn. It's finer than bedding sand and cleaner than construction sand, which makes it the right choice anywhere precision and cleanliness matter.
What it's used for
- Paving stone joints and gaps — swept into the joints between pavers after installation to lock them in place and prevent shifting and weed growth
- Concrete and mortar mixes — the clean, consistent grain size makes it a reliable aggregate for concrete production and masonry work
- Pipe and septic bedding — used around drainage pipe, weeping tile, and septic systems as a clean, protective bedding material
- Playgrounds and sandboxes — washed clean and free of contaminants, safe for children's play areas and recreational surfaces
- Volleyball courts and sports surfaces — the consistent 3mm sizing creates a firm yet comfortable playing surface
- Lawn top dressing — spread thinly over lawns to improve drainage in compacted or clay-heavy Calgary yards, allowing water and air to penetrate the root zone
- Lawn levelling — fills low spots and uneven areas in established lawns without smothering grass
- Aquariums and terrariums — clean, inert, and pH neutral — safe for fish, reptiles, and plants
Why washed matters
Unwashed sand contains fine clay particles and dust that can clog drainage systems, weaken concrete mixes, and create a muddy mess when wet. Washing removes those fines, leaving a sand that drains freely, mixes cleanly, and performs consistently every time. For any application where quality matters — use washed.
3mm vs 5mm — which do you need?
- 3mm washed sand — finer grain, cleaner finish, better for joint filling, topdressing, concrete mixes, and recreational surfaces
- 5mm bedding sand — coarser grain, better for base layers under pavers and flagstone where stability under load matters most
