Calgary Spring Yard Maintenance — Getting Your Home Ready for Summer
Share
Every spring in Calgary, homeowners face the same list. The snow melts, the ground thaws, and suddenly you can see everything winter left behind — low spots where water sat, patchy grass that didn't survive, mulch that's faded to a washed-out grey. It's the yearly reset, and getting it done right at the start of the season sets your yard up for the whole summer.
Here's what we recommend tackling first, and the materials that make the biggest difference.
Fill Your Low Spots with Screened Loam
Calgary's freeze-thaw cycle is hard on soil. Every winter, repeated freezing and thawing shifts and compresses the ground, leaving low spots and sunken areas by the time spring arrives. Left alone, these areas pool water, kill grass, and get worse every year.
The fix is screened loam — also called topsoil or screened fill. Rake a 1–2 inch layer across low areas to level them out, then overseed or lay fresh sod on top. One cubic yard covers roughly 300 square feet at 1 inch deep, which is enough for most residential topdressing jobs.
Order early — screened loam is one of the fastest-moving products in Calgary every spring and sells out quickly in April and May.
Refresh Your Mulch
Cedar mulch and bark chips fade over a Calgary winter. The good news is you don't need to remove the old layer — just top it up with 1–2 inches of fresh mulch in spring. It refreshes the colour, adds back the weed suppression, and helps retain moisture through Calgary's dry summer months.
Black mulch and cedar mulch are our most popular options. Black mulch gives a clean, modern contrast against green plants and grey rock. Cedar mulch has a natural look and a light scent that fades after a few weeks.
Decorative Rock — Do It Once, Never Touch It Again
Here's one of the best long-term landscaping decisions you can make for a Calgary yard: replace the sod on the sides of your home with decorative rock.
Think about it. The sides of most Calgary homes get very little sun — grass struggles, stays patchy, and needs constant watering and cutting just to look mediocre. When it rains, you get mud. Every spring you're reseeding and fighting a losing battle.
Decorative rock solves all of that permanently. Rock never fades. It drains perfectly — no mud, no pooling water. You install it once and it looks the same ten years later as it did on day one. No mowing, no watering, no reseeding every spring.
We always recommend Rundle Rock or Wash Rock for the sides of homes — both are natural Alberta stone that looks great against any house colour. Lay a weed barrier fabric underneath and you'll have a clean, maintenance-free side yard for good.
Restore Your Lawn
For the main lawn areas, spring is the best time to overseed thin patches and topdress with a quality garden mix or compost. Grass grows best when soil temperatures are consistently above 10°C — typically late April through May in Calgary. Get your topsoil and seed down early so the lawn has the whole summer to fill in and establish.
If the damage is extensive, fresh Kentucky Bluegrass sod is the fastest way to a finished lawn. Sod gives you instant results and is fully established within 3–4 weeks of laying.
